ORIGIN OF INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

The roots of International Women's Day trace back to early 20th-century labor movements in North America and Europe. Women working in factories, garment industries, and other sectors organized strikes and demonstrations demanding better working conditions, fair wages, and voting rights.

1908 New York demonstration: On March 8, 1908, thousands of women garment workers marched in New York City to protest poor working conditions and to demand shorter hours, higher pay, and voting rights.

1910 International Socialist Conference: At the Second International Socialist Women's Conference in Copenhagen, Clara Zetkin proposed the idea of an international day to press for women's rights and suffrage. The proposal was approved by more than 100 women from 17 countries.

1911–1917 early observances: The first official observances of Women's Day took place in 1911 in several European countries, where rallies campaigned for women's right to work, vote, and hold public office. In 1917, women in Russia marked International Women's Day by striking for "bread and peace," a protest that contributed to the Russian Revolution and ultimately led to women gaining the right to vote in Soviet Russia.

United Nations recognition: In 1975 the United Nations began celebrating International Women's Day during International Women's Year. In 1977 the UN General Assembly invited member states to proclaim March 8 as the UN Day for women's rights and world peace, helping to internationalize and formalize the observance.

The day raises awareness about persistent gender inequalities, including wage gaps, underrepresentation in leadership, violence against women, and unequal access to education and healthcare.

International Women's Day is both a celebration and a call to action. It honors women's historical and contemporary achievements while spotlighting the work still required to achieve full gender equality. XinDiTai's gesture of giving benefits to female employees on this day is a meaningful way to recognize their contributions and to reassure them that the company values and supports their wellbeing. For lasting impact, workplace celebrations should be paired with long-term policies that advance equality and empower women every day.
