Most first-time toy buyers think ODM is complicated. It is not complicated. It is sequential. Five decisions. Each one builds on the one before it.
A Children's Story Projector is a deceptively simple product: a flashlight-shaped projector that throws colourful story slides onto any flat surface. Turn the dial to advance to the next frame. Listen to music or a narrated story from the built-in speaker. Five discs. Forty image frames. A child's own cinema on the ceiling.
Customizing it for your brand means five things: your artwork on the discs, your colours on the housing, your design on the gift box, your certification for your target market, and a production timeline that matches your event date.
Here is exactly how each step works, using the real example of a 2,000-unit festival order heading to France this autumn. ☝️

1. Custom Discs: Your 16 Artworks, Our Template
The Scenario 🎯
The French agency sent 16 files -- 15 classic paintings from their collection plus a logo splash screen. JPEGs and PNGs. Some were 72 DPI web images. Some were scanned from exhibition catalogues.
Before any disc can be made, every file must meet one specification: PPI higher than 300 at the final print size. A disc frame is roughly 18 mm(round shape) in diameter. At 300 PPI, that means the source image must contain at least 212 pixels across the frame. Anything less and the projection looks soft on a bedroom wall.

The process, step by step:
Step 1 -- We send the disc template. A layered AI or PSD file showing the exact frame dimensions, bleed area, and safe zone for each of the 8 frames per disc; in fact, the template is a 200mm round circle.
Step 2 -- You place your 16 artworks into the template. 15 painting frames plus 1 logo frame. We review for resolution, alignment, and colour profile (CMYK for print-quality film).
Step 3 -- We output a pre-production sample. A single disc printed on the same optical film used in mass production. You test it in a projector body and confirm the projection quality on a white wall.
Step 4 -- Once approved, we produce the full 5-disc set. Each disc carries 8 image frames. Total: 40 frames (your 16 artworks can repeat or we can fill remaining slots with complementary content).
What to prepare before you send files:
Source artwork at 300 PPI minimum. AI, PSD, or high-resolution PDF. JPEG acceptable if original resolution is sufficient.
A clear list of which image goes on which disc and in which frame order.
Your logo file in vector format (AI or EPS) for frame 1 of disc 1.
The Fix
Send us your artwork files. We check resolution, place them into the template, and return a pre-production disc sample. You approve the projection. We proceed to mass production. This is the longest single step in the customization chain -- typically 7-10 days from artwork receipt to approved disc sample. Plan accordingly.
2. Custom Colour: Two-Tone Without New Tooling
The Scenario 🎯
The French agency wanted deep navy blue for the projector head and black for the body. Two colours. One product.
The LMP002 projector body is molded in two separate ABS parts: the head (which rotates to focus) and the main housing (which holds the battery, speaker, and disc mechanism). Each part is independently colour-matched. This means a two-tone colour scheme requires zero new tooling. We simply change the colour masterbatch in two injection molding hoppers.
What two-tone means in practice:
Part 1 (projector head) -- Injection molded in colour A. Currently available in blue, pink, or green as standard. Custom colour requires a Pantone match.
Part 2 (main housing) -- Injection molded in colour B. Same material, different masterbatch ratio.
Assembly line -- The two parts snap together during final assembly. No painting. No secondary finishing. The colour is in the plastic.
The Pantone matching workflow:
Step 1 -- You provide Pantone codes. One for the head, one for the body.
Step 2 -- Our material supplier mixes a colour masterbatch. A small batch of ABS pellets with concentrated pigment.
Step 3 -- We inject a colour chip. A flat 50 mm x 50 mm plaque in the target colour. We ship it to you for approval under natural and artificial light.
Step 4 -- You approve. We order the full masterbatch quantity for your production run.
The Fix
Pantone matching is fast. ABS colour chips take 3-5 days. Masterbatch ordering takes another 3-5 days. The bottleneck is not the factory. It is the decision. Pick your Pantone codes early and the colour is ready before the disc sample is approved.

3. Custom Packaging: Your Gift Box, Your Brand
The Scenario 🎯
A festival order is not a warehouse order. These 2,000 units are going into gift bags at the Fête des Lumières. The box IS the first impression.
The standard LMP002 ships in a basic colour box. The French agency needed a retail-ready gift box: their logo, their artwork, bilingual French and English text, CE and WEEE markings, age grading, and a manufacturer traceability label.
The gift box specification:
Dimensions -- 215 mm x 107 mm x 102 mm. This is the internal cavity. The flat carton sheet is larger when unfolded.
Printing -- 4C (four-colour CMYK offset). Full-colour artwork wraps the entire exterior.
Interior -- Die-cut EVA or PET blister tray. Holds the projector body, 5 discs, USB charging cable, and instruction manual in dedicated cavities. No movement during shipping.
Text -- Bilingual FR/EN. Must include: product name, age recommendation, CE mark, WEEE symbol, manufacturer name and address (Shenzhen Xinditai Electronics Co., Ltd), batch code, and country of origin.
What you need to provide:
Box artwork in AI or PDF format. CMYK colour space. 300 DPI minimum.
Bilingual text content. French and English. We do not write or translate packaging copy.
Your brand logo in vector format.
Any retail barcode (EAN/UPC) to be printed on the box.
The Fix
Packaging design is the most underestimated step in ODM. You control the artwork. We control the print. Send us a print-ready AI file. Do not send a JPEG screenshot of a Canva design and expect it to print at 300 DPI. The box is the first thing your customer sees. Get it right.

4. Full Certification: CE, EN 71, RoHS, REACH, and GPSR
The Scenario 🎯
The French agency asked: "What certifications does this need for France?"
The answer for any children's product entering the EU in 2026: a minimum of five certifications plus a mandatory GPSR responsible person filing. Certification is not optional. It is not a cost you can skip. Without it, your container does not clear customs.
Certification requirement
CE Marking -- Self-declaration by the manufacturer. Covers compliance with all applicable EU directives. Must be affixed to the product and the packaging.
EN 71-1 -- Mechanical and physical properties. Tests for sharp edges, small parts, drop resistance, and torque/tension on accessible components. The projector passes because it has no removable small parts and the battery compartment requires a screwdriver.
EN 71-2 -- Flammability. Tests the ABS housing and any textile components. ABS is inherently flame-retardant.
EN 71-3 -- Migration of certain elements. Tests for heavy metals (lead, cadmium, mercury, chromium) in accessible materials. ABS and standard masterbatch pass without reformulation.
EN 62115 -- Safety of electric toys. Tests the 18650 lithium battery circuit, the USB charging port, the LED light source, and the speaker. Includes short-circuit protection, overcharge protection, and temperature monitoring.
RoHS -- Restriction of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. Covers the PCB, solder, wiring, and battery.
REACH -- Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation of chemicals. Covers SVHC (substances of very high concern) in all materials including the ABS housing and packaging ink.
SGS or TÜV third-party test report -- An independent laboratory verifies the above standards. Most EU distributors require a named lab report, not just a factory self-declaration.
IF YOU ARE PLANNING A CUSTOM STORY PROJECTOR RIGHT NOW
Send me your artwork count (how many images), your target colours (Pantone codes if you have them), and your delivery deadline. I will return a full ODM timeline with specification confirmations within 48 hours.
GPSR (General Product Safety Regulation) -- Requires an EU-based responsible person (importer or authorised representative) whose name and address appear on the product. Effective December 2024. Mandatory for all consumer products entering the EU.
What the factory provides vs what you provide:
Factory provides: EN 71-1/2/3 test reports, EN 62115 test report, RoHS declaration, REACH SVHC declaration, CE declaration of conformity.
You provide: GPSR responsible person in France (your company or your authorised representative), your brand name and address for the CE declaration, any additional retailer-specific test requirements.
The Fix
Ask your factory for the full certification package before production starts. Do not assume "CE" means "all tests are done." CE is a declaration. The test reports are the evidence. Request the PDF reports. Review the test dates. Certifications expire or need updating when materials change. A test report from 2023 may not cover a colour masterbatch changed in 2026.
